However, Lady Fortune was unwilling to smile on young Kal, and life remained hard. The guard, Zach, did his best to raise him as a brother, but neither of them was suited to a life in the slums of Corellia, and before more than a dozen years had passed, Zach left for the Empire where he hoped to eek out a better existence amongst the stormtrooper corps.
And perhaps he might have, had he not been assigned to the Death Star.
With his adopted brother gone, and soon to be dead, Kal had little choice but to fend for himself. Raine, who had been taken by the assistant for fear of Janus discovering them, was long forgotten and thus began a lonely life focused around only one thing; looking out for number one.
Forced to grow up faster than nature intended, Kal was quick to isolate himself from others, and when the opportunity to leave Corellia, to follow Zach into the Empire, came up, he was quick to follow. There, in the training halls of Carida, he excelled in the arts of war, and he might have become a prodigy of the academy except for one thing; Raine.
She appeared from nowhere, having tracked down the brother who had almost completely forgotten about her, only for him to turn his back on her. And perhaps it might have ended there, but for the fact that the Corellian overheard a group of cadets discussing a plan to 'enjoy' his younger sister.
Not a single one of them outlived that night.
Although his actions were quickly covered up, there were few at the academy who didn't know of Kal's actions, and even fewer who weren't relieved when the intense and arrogant young cadet was accelerated toward graduation and allowed to leave the Empire's service.
In the aftermath of his Imperial service, Kal spent several years simply wandering the galaxy, picking up mercenary work where he could
and doing whatever else it took to survive when he couldn't. Eventually, a chance encounter with Viceprex Nagrom of the CSA led to a more long-term career
for the Corellian, and Kal served the Corporates for a number of years in a great many roles, including deep cover operations in the ranks of the Blue Star
Pirates, the New Republic and the Shadow Order, before apparently transferring his allegiance to the cause of the Galactic Empire.
However, it quickly became apparent that Kal was merely manipulating his superiors in the Empire into striking out against the enemies
of the CSA, the BSP and the Sith, who had long been trying to re-establish their ancient empire in the Tingel Arm. These manipulations came to a head in the
year 24 ABY, as the Corellian orchestrated a series of strikes against the CSA's foes that culminated in the destruction of the Sith homeworld of Korriban
and the pirate base on Nedjiv. These incidents, among others, earned him the title 'Butcher of Nedjiv' along with the enemity of many of the rogue
elements within the galaxy. This enemity was to remain strong even when Kal defected to the New Republic and began to ferment rebellion against the corrupt
regiem of Geherin Zenos, eventually leading to many declaring that they wouldn't ally with his Rebellion until another leader was installed in his place.
Unfortunately for those who wish the Corellian removed from power, Kal quickly proved to be an effective leader for the Rebellion,
winning over more allies with each passing day until only the most diehard of his opponents was willing to stand against him. However, those selfsame opponents
were soon afforded a rare stroke of luck as unrest and incompetence in the Corporate Direx Board threatened to cripple the Corellian's power base, forcing
him to hastily abandon his plans and return to Corporate space to retake his position as ExO of the Corporate Sector Authority.
